Los Angeles photographer Quam Odunsi — or Reserve Result to his associates — recently presented “The Regents: Film on Paper & Canvas” exhibition at Design Matters. Based around a government agent who finds himself fascinated by the local citizens and their private lives, Odunsi utilizes his candid style in presenting a striking selection of imagery. While the exhibition featured Polaroid images, canvas paintings and sculptures, Odunsi’s THROUGH THE LENS upholds a number of photos that highlight his trademark, surveillance-inspired approach. Shot with 35mm and 120mm film, Odunsi tempers with the way commonplace surroundings are perceived, framing the photos in a way to allow for the subjects to speak for themselves. With the ability to provoke uncanny narratives via snapshots of the mundane, Odunsi’s retro approach proves the use of film and analogue mediums to still be one of the most honest forms of documentation. A picture is worth a thousand words — at least that’s how the old saying goes. Our latest feature THROUGH THE LENS aims to see the world through the lens of various creatives. Be it a professional photographer, a blogger, a creative director, or just a fashion designer who happens to have an affinity for taking pictures, each photo set offers a glimpse into the frame of those individuals who have captured a very unique moment in time. In place of textual interviews or written pieces, THROUGH THE LENS is a visual interpretation and platform for those who have a story to tell. A picture’s worth a thousand words? Enjoy the read.
