As the Martine Rose boy has matured, so has his has tastes. Working timely military references into the utilitarian elements inherent in her label, the British designer partnered with elite armed forces outfitter Bates Military Footwear for her Fall/Winter 2013 presentation in London. The collection featured a selection of Bates’ innovative and superior footwear, boots used in military organizations worldwide — including the U.S. military — and added another dimension to the already functional approach of Rose’s garments. The military wasn’t the sole supplier of inspiration however; drawing on her experiences in Jamaica, Martine Rose Fall/Winter 2013 also references the rites and rituals of the Rasta community, with Haile Selassie I and the Lion of Judah scattered throughout as prominent motifs. Watch this exclusive video shot by Santiago Arbelaez for a closer look at the collection and the Bates Military Footwear it features, along with an exclusive interview with Martine Rose backstage at the presentation in Covent Garden’s Hospital Club.
