Project Space: MASH Exhibition Los Angeles

May 17, 2010Eventsby Staff15 Views

Last year, Incase sponsored the MASH team when they embarked on their uniquely subversive journey to crash the 2009 edition of the Tour of California on their track bikes. For nine days, MASH team riders ascended on the same 700-mile course as international cycling teams on bikes with one gear and no brakes, battling the horrendous rains and traversing some of the steepest hills in California. A little more than one year later, Project Space is proud to host, with MASH, a special exhibition entitled “Revisit MASH Tour of California,” a retrospective on their incredible journey during the 2009 Tour of California. The Project Space installation will showcase documentation from the MASH experience, including a new short film and behind-the-scenes photography, and a display of artifacts from the tour, such as road-worn bicycles, a torn kit from the 2009 Tour and more.

The opening reception for the MASH exhibition will take place Saturday, May 22nd, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Preceding the opening reception is the MASH-organized fixed gear only race from Echo Park, coincidentally timed with Stage 7 of the 2010 Tour of California. The race will finish at Project Space, culminating with an awards ceremony during the exhibition’s opening reception.

I think the UCI might have something to say about them competing in the race KB24. It was for fun. Not part of the Tour. I don’t think MASH would give Katyusha, Astana and Liquigas much of a run for their money.

^ Uh, they didn’t race with the actual race teams because:

    1) They’re not fast at all compared to someone who is a professional athlete who rides for 6 hours plus a day, works with coaches, and has been racing bicycles since they were 13.

    2) They’re on sweet fixies which would get their asses kicked on the mountains and the downhills (and the flats for that matter).

    3) They [Mash] barely even finished (even if they did) the entire course/tour, IIRC. I didn’t honestly care enough/follow it enough to remember a year later.

Think of it like some High School recess basketball team challenging the LA Lakers if you want to talk competition.

FWIW: I have nothing against them personally or what frames they build, but people should stop comparing them to actual pro cyclists.

Mad respect to the MASH Crew for keepin it legit.
I wonder what the other riders thought when they saw these guys on track bikes?
I also wonder how they finished in the race?
