"Day Job?" the Photo Exhibition

Inspired by the transcendence of creativity from one medium to another, “Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition is themed around various non-photographic-based creatives and their relationship with photography. For many of the participants, few come from a photography background but have been successful in their own right involving everything from creating brands, design, art, entertainment and retail among other mediums; But it’s how they apply their primary creative outputs onto photography which is of the greatest interest. Among the participants are jeffstaple of Staple Design, Jon Warren of Vans, Jules Gayton of Leilow, Peter James Lee of Cassette Denim, Neek of Stussy Las Vegas, Ian Paley of Garbstore, Kobe Chen of Subcrew and JJ Lin of SMG. The group show’s inaugural exhibition curated by HYPEBEAST’s Eugene Kan will begin this Friday, April 9th at the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong. Proceeds from the sale of the 1 of 1 prints will be donated to the International Center of Photography.

“Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition
For me personally, I’ve been extremely fascinated by the approach many of my peers have taken in the realm of photography. A lot of these people have become successful in their own right with their primary professions including publishers; designers; brand founders; retailers; artists and musicians. But seeing their creativity applied on a photographic platform that is purely their passion with no financial reward really inspires me.
It sort of confirms my belief that creativity really has no boundaries (when it comes to what medium they use) but for people like myself that weren’t well-versed in more technical forms of visual communication, photography is perhaps my best and only tool. For many so-called “hobbyists” like myself, I feel little weight is held in whether or not the rest of the world actually appreciates your photography… it’s almost as though it’s beyond the point. You’re not in need of making money so the only person that needs satisfying is yourself… perhaps a bit selfish. But as I touched upon, I do like to see the transcending of mediums onto photography and its subsequent success.
“Day Job?” the Photo Exhibition is hopefully the start of my way of investigating photography from a different vantage point. Sure the proliferation of photographic hardware is at a pinnacle, but even then, for that split second in time, that moment is one never to be re-visited as the lens serves as the eyes to what inspires many in a decidedly non-photographic industry. Proceeds from the sale of each print will be donated to the International Center of Photography, a world-class museum and school dedicated to exploring the possibilities of the photographic medium through dynamic exhibitions and educational programs.

The opening night of “Day Job?” will take place on Wednesday, April 7th, 2010 at Above Second Gallery between 6 pm and 10 pm (details below). Each print will come framed and printed with archival inks on Hahnemühle FineArt paper. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will be donated to the International Center of Photography.
