Banksy “Guard On Duty” Removed

April 14, 2010Uncategorizedby Staff22 Views

It looks like the recent “Guard On Duty” piece by Banksy has been removed. JetSetGraffiti reports that it was taken down by Ace Gallery owner Doug Christmas yesterday morning, although no further information is available at the moment. Looks like someone is looking to make a pretty penny though. Enjoy!

Doug Christmas, the gallerist who removed Banky’s “Guard On Duty” in Los Angeles by cutting it out of the wall, claims he had good information that it was in imminent danger of being stolen. So, he decided to steal it instead, but of course, unlike those shadowy thieves, he only has the best intentions for it. He made the following assurances about the work when reached by phone this afternoon: 1) It isn’t for sale now and never will be. 2) He’s in touch with “Banksy’s network” and will gladly give it to them if they want it. 3) The “Guard On Duty” being offered on eBay is definitely a fraud, since the original is currently sitting pretty at his undisclosed location. As Robert Ripley once put it, “believe it or not!”

People. Banksy made over 2 million dollars on his last show in L.A, selling the street art you say belong to the people. Then he goes and tags the building that is set to be a museum for one of the most infamous gallery owners in the country and you think it’s shameless that said gallery owner of 30 years wants to make a buck? It’s all about money. It’s crook on crook. I find the whole thing HI-larious. Welcome to the world of art as a business.

I don’t think he can actually profit from the Banksy piece.
I watched a documentary on people drilling pieces of concrete up and taking out walls with Banky’s work on and trying to sell it on for a hefty price tag, but no one is able to as it has to get verification from a certain company or something and they won’t do it so therefore it is VERY hard to sell…

That is awesome he stole this. Banksy is a vandal and paints on people’s property and around the city all the time, which is great and the guy is clever. But then the Ace Gallery guy pulled a game recognize game play. You put art on the streets to promote your film, I sell artwork. So now, I’m taking it. Its called a gangster mentality. We on hypebeast should laud Ace for this.

At least the piece will be protected from losers trying to cover it with one of their stupid tags. That’s the good thing.

Ha! 10 years ago the owner would have pressed charges against Banksy but now he’ll be asking for a certificate of authenticity…

  • Kronik

Remember boys and girls: street “art” is actually graffiti, and it’s illegal to make “art” on the property of others. And it most certainly does not belong to the streets, but rather the private property on which it was illegally placed.

I find it hard to believe that no one on this site would sell a Banksy wheatpaste/stencil/painting if they happened to find it on their personal property.
