Along with a busy year of major art exhibitions held in major cities and events around the world, Takashi Murakami produced a limited-edition collection with Vans that shook the footwear market this year. The Japanese contemporary artist lent his creative eye to a range of apparel, sneakers and skate decks that took traditional Vans silhouettes like the Classic Slip-Ons LX and decorated them with Murakami’s signature pop culture and traditional Japanese motifs in his distinct “Superflat” artistic style.
Murakami’s philanthropic efforts this year also saw the artist join the likes of Damien Hirst for UNICEF and FC Barcelona’s 1in11 Campaign, a charity auction that raised money to provide sports and education access to 58 million kids who aren’t enrolled in school. From Art Basel and Gagosian exhibits to designing T-shirts and sneakers, the prolific artist’s ambitious projects and collections this year only broaden Murakami’s ever-growing portfolio.
