Rick Owens has always been a performance artist in the eyes of some of his most loyal fans. His clothes and accessories are an extension of this expressive art that contorts, skews, and dissects what would ordinarily be everyday clothing for the general public. For his FW20 collection, Owens looked to glam rock and biker cultures to create a more theatrical ensemble — there was asymmetrical cuts and large platform footwear. This year also revealed Owens’ SS21 “PHLEGETHON” collection, a dive into his own archives which were repurposed and made into new silhouettes.
Perhaps the 58-year-old designer’s biggest moment of the year was the release of collaborative products alongside luxury outerwear brand Moncler. The capsule consisted of outerwear, trousers, sweats, tees, shoes and more. Inspired by Area 51 and extraterrestrial forces, the jacket silhouettes were cocoon-like in shape with some being extreme in length and thickness. It’ll be interesting to see if this partnership flourishes into the next season.
