At the age of 24, Olivier Rousteing was appointed as the Creative Director of Balmain in 2011, making him the youngest to achieve such high ranks in Paris since Yves Saint Laurent. And indeed, Rousteing took his youthfulness and transformed Balmain, a historically traditional French design house, into contemporary high fashion world’s belle of the ball. Using social media and personal relationships, Rousteing curated a ‘Balmain Army’ of diverse, internationally famous female figures — Rihanna, the Kardashian and Jenner clan, Gigi and Bella Hadid, and Beyoncé to name a few — to recalibrate the luxury brand’s direction and capture the attention of the new generation, placing Balmain front and center on the 21st century stage. In the recent years under Rousteing’s guidance, Balmain has opened multiple flagship stores, launched several successful collaborations, and become the “global, strong and powerful empire” that Rousteing aspired it to be.
