Drizzy, Aubrey, Jimmy… call him what you will, the 6 God saw an incredible 2016. Starting off the year with a bang, the Canadian rapper released his fourth studio album VIEWS back in April. The album went on to reach triple-platinum status and still continues to break records, as well as recently being named Apple Music’s first album to reach over 1 billion streams. The Toronto artist’s success doesn’t just end there; venturing out onto new avenues, Drake’s heightened spotlight saw the unveiling of Virginia Black Whiskey, receiving a key to the city of Toronto, playing host for Toronto’s NBA All-Star Weekend, and announcing his plans to open a strip club named “The Ballet.” The year also saw Drizzy revisit old habits with cryptic billboard messages, debuting the short film ‘Please Forgive Me,’ and kicking off of his ‘Summer Sixteen Tour’ with fellow rapper Future.
Drake’s October’s Very Own also saw a strong year with an OVO x Air Jordan collaboration seeing a slew of clothing and its very own pair of Air Jordan 12 being released. The OVO game was so strong this year even English grime artist Skepta showcased his love with an Owl tattoo. Aside from music and apparel, the most successful move on Drake’s part this year goes to confessing his love to Rihanna at the MTV VMAs while presenting her with the Video Vanguard Award.
