Balmain Resort 2025 Is Marked With Olivier Rousteing's Legacy
With handwritten prints from the creative director and trompe l’oeil reprisals of his signature biker styles.
Over his 15-year tenure at Parisian maison Balmain, Olivier Rousteing has left an indelible mark on the house with his unapologetic glamour and noir streetwear edge. His latest men’s resort collection pays homage to the brand he has called home for more than a decade, with handwritten letters and his signature biker styles immortalized into the fabric of the collection.
Balmain’s 2025 resort collection turns its familiar boldly tailored silhouettes upside down in new configurations and surreal trompe l’oeil graphics. In tandem with sharp-shouldered monochrome suiting, cropped blazers are hybridized with panels borrowed from leather motorcycle jackets and washed denim truckers. The spectral image of Rousteing’s signature biker jeans is printed onto the front and back of solid trousers, while haphazardly placed images of Balmain motorcycle jackets are found on the front sides of solid tops.
Within the mix of trompe l’oeil play, a charcoal grey tee shirt stands out strongly, with elegantly draped details that echo the expertly carved garbs worn by heroic statues of Greek and Roman antiquity. Towards the middle of the 46-look collection, Rousteing’s cursive handwriting appears both larger-than-life and later, shrunk down in scale for a gradient of micro scribbles.
In the true spirit of Rousteing, the tail-end of the range showcases his maximalist sensibilities. A second-skin long-sleeve top is covered in iridescent sequins forming the image of a toned male torso. The creative director’s handwriting appears at its largest scale within a polished brass embellishment interlacing through the bodice and sleeves of a black blazer. The gigantic strokes spelling singular words like “Amor” trace the lapels of another blazer behind and around the collar, seemingly consuming the garment in its enormity. The finale of big and bold looks serves as an ode to Balmain’s classic black-and-gold codes, taking the form of a love letter from its long-time designer.
