GM recently launched its new Advanced Design Studio in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England with an unveiling of a new EV concept car for the future. Dubbed just the Chevrolet Corvette concept car, the vehicle is one of three prototypes expected to be revealed this year.

GM’s new design teams are expected to drive ideation and innovation across the company. With the new UK-located studio, GM is demonstrating its commitment to Europe as the company scales its Cadillac EV business there. Slated to launch Corvette sales across the U.K. and mainland Europe, the opening of the UK design studio is strategic and an integral part of GM’s global design footprint. Led by Julian Thomson, the studio takes over 24,584-square-foot at the Royal Leamington Spa studio and employes over 30 designers. Michael Simcoe, senior VP of global design said, “Our advanced design team’s mandate extends well beyond creating production vehicles. While they collaborate within our global design network on production and concept vehicle programs, these teams are primarily tasked with imagining what mobility could look like five, 10, and even 20 years into the future and driving innovation for GM.”

Under the Corvette nameplate, the company is able to introduce experimental cars, concepts and prototypes to bridge traditional engineering with modern automotive design. Simcoe said, “As part of the Corvette creative study, we asked multiple studios to develop hypercar concepts, which we’ll see more of later this year. It was important that they all pay homage to Corvette’s historic DNA, but each studio brought their own unique creative interpretation to the project. That is exactly what our advanced design studio network is intended to do – push the envelope, challenge convention and imagine what could be.”

As for the futuristic Corvette EV concept car, the design team incorporates the Corvette’s iconic heritage with futuristic aesthetics. Thomson said, “One of the most unusual and significant aspects of our concept’s design is a feature known as Apex Vision. A nod to Corvette’s centerline focus, and inspired by the iconic ‘split window’ 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, this feature emphasizes a singular vertical central spine that is also a structural element, also providing a panoramic view of the road and surroundings.” With the exterior, the upper half captures the classic design elements with a futuristic twist, while the lower half focuses on functional technical design that include EV battery technology embedded into the structure and aerodynamics elements. Race-car inspired, the concept car features on-road efficiency and on-track performance, a sculpted underbody for lowered ride height and more.
