California-based Specialized Bikes is angling to reimagine the sport of cross-country cycling with efficient, extremely lightweight bikes designed to handle a wide spectrum of terrain.

When climbing a mountain or going downhill, the key to optimal control is less weight – albeit without skimping on sturdiness and efficiency. With its new line of bikes, dubbed the Epic 8, Specialized has a variety of bikes for each rider’s needs.

For those looking to invest in a top-tier mountain bike, the $14,500 USD S-Works Epic 8 is a 22 lb that packs in active suspension without the typical added weight via Specialized’s RockShox Flight Attendant system. It also offers a subtle and convenient means of in-frame storage in the form of a subtle hole in the downtube and it’s the only bike composed of the sleek but practical FACT 12m carbon frame.

Another standout in the lineup is the 24 lb Epic 8 Expert. While comparatively cheaper at $7,000 USD, the model packs similar capabilities to the S-Works with 12% greater absorbency for bumps and vibrations, ideal for bumpy mountainous roads. Specialized says it’s also cut down on “pedal bob” by 20%, helping riders to conserve energy on lengthier runs.

All of Specialized’s Epic 8 bikes also feature steering stops to minimize damage in the event of a fall. Rounding out the new line are the Epic 8 Pro, as well as EVO versions of the Epic 8 Pro and Comp.
