Square to Accept Apple Pay With New Contactless Reader
Square will begin accepting Apple Pay, other NFC payments and EMV chip cards with a new contactless reader this fall.
Mobile payments, already infinitely improved in recent years thanks to Square’s now ubiquitous magstripe reader, are set to get even better this fall with the introduction of Square’s latest gadget: a pocket-sized contactless reader. Working in conjunction with Square’s free point-of-sale app, the new reader will offer two new ways for sellers to accept payments: Apple Pay and other NFC payments, as well as EMV chip cards — already the standard for European banks and soon to be implemented across American banks as well. Customers can simply hold their device near the reader to trigger payment or insert their EMV chip card into the reader, which is then left in place for the duration of the sale. And if you’re still a magstripe user, don’t fret: Square’s magstripe reader will come packaged along with the new device so you can swipe cards the old-fashioned way, too.
