All hail the Bumper Bed by Marc Newson, where bumper car meets bed meets art meets bedroom furniture. The Sydney-born, London-based industrial designer continues to impress with his visionary aesthetic. Created for the collection of French craftsmen extraordinaires Domeau & Pérès, this piece was also designed to cause “people like me to replace their faithful mattress with a ‘beautiful bed’”–says Mark Newson who slept on a mattress on the floor until 1997. Inspired by things like boxing rings and life rafts, this bed uses upholstered polyurethane foam blocks and elastic webbing to frame your mattress with a thick semi-solid edge that you can sit on.
