This gorgeous vintage Rolex Submariner 5513 Tropical Dial just sold for $14,600 USD at the “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces” Antiquorum auction in Geneva. The fine and rare 1966 self-winding, water-resistant stainless steel wristwatch with a stainless steel riveted Rolex bracelet was valued at $10,000-$14,000 USD, but came off above the upper bracket of even that estimate. A result of natural and gradual aging, Tropical Dial Rolexes fetch a significant premium above their black counterparts. Akin to ‘patina’ in vintage automotive terms, the ‘tropical’ turns a beautiful russet gold in the sun and makes for a valuable collectors’ item.
