Hattie Collins sat down with Skepta in another installation of the RBMA UK Tour a few weeks ago. This lecture with Skepta was not live streamed like the A$AP Rocky one so this is our first look. He opens graciously giving due credit to Hattie Collins and as he says you should indeed get familiar.
As they sit in Machester, Skepta calls it his second home pointing out his whole swag, the “get this money dress code,” comes from his time spent there. He also speaks a lot on different parts of England and how happy he is to be offered to the opportunity to travel and with his more recent popularity in the US, he gets show that the UK too has all parts of the spectrum as New York or LA does.
Hattie has to kind of push, but she does point out to the audience that Skepta is a tiny bit jet-lagged coming from LA where he says he was in the studio with ATL-up and comer Playboi Carti, Kanye and Earl Sweatshirt. Perhaps a little Coachella-ing as well? He does however point out his extreme dislike for “email music” and values being in the studio with the artists he’s working with, thus will be spending a little more time in LA.
After a big year, he does point Dev Hynes is actually one of the first American artists he worked with and although every interview wants to discuss Ye and Drake, it remains more about he connects with the actual person before he decides if he will work with them. He encourages everyone to keep it one hundred and maintain they’re integrity.
Check out the rest the interview to see him discuss individuality, grime in America, lyrics like “ring, ring pussy, ya mom is on the phone,” working with his brother and a phone call and situation that led to his very first bar. Although he keeps it pretty close to his chest, he says discusses working with Kanye and his upcoming album. He has eight songs for Konnichiwa, he wants more.
