Bob Dylan - Pretty Saro

Almost a year ago, Bob Dylan released his 35th solo album, Tempest, on his 50-year label home, Columbia Records. Comprised of ten tracks written by the man himself, the LP received critical acclaim and proved to the world that the 72-year-old legend still has it. Dylan is back with new music for 2013, but this time, he’s readying the release of 35 very special songs from his coveted vault of rare and never-before-heard recordings. The album that will contain these tracks is The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 – Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), which will hit stores on August 27. The recordings stem from sessions when Dylan was working on his albums Nashville Skyline (1969), Self Portrait (1970) and New Morning (1970). One of the tracks is an unreleased cover of “Pretty Saro,” an English folk song originating in the early 1700s that has been passed down from generation to generation and been rehashed in the past by the likes of Doc Watson, Pete Seeger and Judy Collins. Today, Rolling Stone premiered Dylan’s version of it alongside an accompanying video by filmmaker Jennifer Lebeau, who has worked with Dylan several times over the past 20 years. “His vocal delivery is so haunting,” she stated. “I wanted to be able to visually represent that sort of unrequited love in a world that seems like it should be sad, but the people are always happy and fine.” The result is a composition of images of rural American in the 1940s-1960s taken from the Library of Congress’ Farm Security Administration photo collection.
