London-based menswear label, Martine Rose, drops the long-awaited Spring/Summer 2019 slip-on square toe loafers in two tactile materials. Rose’s early-90’s rave, post-punk and hip-hop culture inspirations have already informed some wild footwear silhouettes, but these beefy leather shoes take the cake.

In line with Rose’s retro influences, the square toe, gold chain-abetted slip-ons hearken back to the days of the “wide boy,” Rose told GQ recently. Back in the day, this shady individual “ha[d] a little bit of attitude, a little bit of arrogance or flash. He wore Patrick Cox loafers, which at a particular time in England were a status-symbol shoe. It said so much.” Rose’s take on the chunky leather shoe removes the rear heel and upgrades the design with premium faux python.

Crafted in Portugal, the backless loafers unite a stacked block heel with the aforementioned gold chain hardware on the forefoot. Detailed tonal stitching accentuates the classic silhouette, as the all-over python pattern elevates the leather shoe. For a less overt take on the statement footwear, Rose offers the same shoe in a comparatively understated black grain leather colorway.
