Scotland’s North Sea is surrounded by superstitions, folklore and rituals, all established over a period of centuries by the sailors and fisherman that make their living on it, so Hanon and adidas Consortium are bringing those tales to life with a ZX420 “Luck of the Sea.” Much like the stories they encapsulate — whistling in the direction of the wind, putting a certain foot forward or never saving a man overboard — the superstitious sneakers are resplendent with meaning.

Uppers mix gray, brown and soft tan mesh and suede pieces, and feature bright blue accents as any sea-worthy shoe should. These are displayed on the throat and Three Stripe overlays, while the left shoe adds a flame graphic on its tongue and heel to replace the standard adidas Trefoil on the right shoe.

Look to the inside of the tongue on the left shoe, and you’ll also see a “Right Foot First” graphic, nodding to the old sailor’s superstition of always boarding your boat with the right foot in front of the left foot. Rich blue-green is present on the collar lining and the midsole, where it works with another dash of bright blue to finish the look. The “Luck of the Sea” also comes with a “lucky coin” that’s nestled in the hangtag.

The Hanon x adidas Consortium ZX420 “Luck of the Sea” will release on the Hanon webstore come November 27. The MSRP is set at £100 GBP (approximately $133 USD).
