Pharrell Remixes a Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebum"
Skateboard P remixes the ‘People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm’ classic.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of A Tribe Called Quest’s seminal debut People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm and, next month, Q-Tip and co. are celebrating with a deluxe reissue of the LP. The re-release — said to be the first of many on the way over the next few years — will include a number of remixes, the highlight of which is undoubtedly Pharrell’s take on the classic “Bonita Applebum.” As Rolling Stone notes, Pharrell’s version swaps out the original guitar sample of RAMP’s “Daylight,” as well as the sitar and vocals of Rotary Connection’s “Memory Band” in favor of “swirling synths, a ‘Good God’ soul vocal sample and background crowd chatter” — not to mention “the best sexual moans on record since Lil Louis’s ‘French Kiss.’”
Check out the remix above and look for it to be accompanied by J. Cole’s take on “Can I Kick It?,” as well as CeeLo Green’s remix of “Footprints.” The 25th anniversary edition of People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is due out November 13 and can be pre-ordered now via iTunes.
