Polls: Point-and-Shoot vs. DSLR vs. Mirrorless Digital Cameras

Since the introduction of a Micro 4/3rds format into the digital camera realm, we’ve seen a shift of power. While the segments of both point-and-shoot and DSLRs have suffered sales at the hands of these competent competitors, that’s not to say each side doesn’t have its benefits. Despite its bulk and weight, DSLR cameras for the time being still offer the greatest absolute performance in the form of dynamic range, ISO handling, and of course accessories. On the flipside, point-and-shoot cameras still hold the smallest footprint and in ample lighting can provide shots that can stand next to most systems in a small and powerful package. So that leads us to the middle road between both P&S and DSLRs where mirrorless EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens) options reside – representing the best of both worlds. The versatility of having interchangeable lenses with a smaller footprint, many believe this EVIL movement will become the go-to choice for photographers. As its performance aligns with that of DSLRs, the size factor is perhaps a little harder to solve as pocketability for the most part is a realm only occupied by P&S cameras. Unmentioned through all this is the rise of the mobile camera. The same gadget you use for your browsing, gaming and emailing has proved to be an important creative tool thanks to decent performance, immediate connectivity, and a strong social media aspect.

So that leads us to the question, which system do you still prefer? Are the days of totting your DSLR over your shoulder over in favor of a more compact option? Will P&S live on forever or will they eventually be replaced by your trusty and competent iPhone camera? We’ve deliberately left out mobile cameras as we’re focused only on cameras rather than multi-disciplinary options.

Looking back to a poll earlier this week between Snapbacks vs. Fitteds, a close result had snapbacks earning 56.3% of the vote (2,956 votes) to come out on top.
