The art world is always curious at what renowned sculpture Tom Sachs will do next. The American creative has been known to blend his intricate style of art with fashion, furniture and other design disciplines. Film was Sachs’ first medium of choice for the year as he debuted How to Learn How to Surf in January. The 30-plus minute movie was a visual guide on how starting to surf is about embracing triumphs and failures. He took his studio team to Bali and there, they documented and learned the culture and art of the sport from two professionals.

The Tom Sachs and Nike partnership has always caused frenzy especially with the first two Mars Yard sneaker releases and the Tom Sachs x NIKECRAFT capsule. The latter which includes the Mars Yard overshoe and an exploding poncho was initially released in 2019. However, the products saw a wider release in 2020 and instantly sold out at participating retailers. Besides working with Nike, Sachs also focused on his own studio work this year. He took over Isetan Shinjuku for a pop-up exhibition in July and also launched a collective of paintings for viewing at New York City’s Acquavella Galleries in November and December.
