Netflix's 'The Devil Next Door' Investigates Grandfather Accused of Heinous Nazi Crimes
Identified by Holocaust survivors as the notorious Ivan the Terrible.
Netflix Originals has released a trailer for its upcoming documentary The Devil Next Door documentary. The film follows a Cleveland grandfather who was accused of being Ivan the Terrible, a sadistic Nazi guard from World War II.
In the brief teaser clip, we are introduced to the true story of a retired Ukrainian-American autoworker named John Demjanjuk living in Cleveland, Ohio with his family in the 1980s. However, once a group of Holocaust survivors identifies Demjanjuk as Ivan the Terrible from a picture, the old man is extradited to Israel to stand trial for crimes against humanity.
As such, the trial in Jerusalem plunged the nation into drama, with the press and public drawn into “the trial of the century.” According to Netflix’s synopsis, “As the case uncovers dark corners of memory and the horrors of war, the Demjanjuk case becomes a race against time for the defendant and his alleged victims.”
