Ice Cube Sets the Record Straight on 'Straight Outta Compton'
In case you were wondering what exactly a “sawed-off” was.
“Straight Outta Compton” is perhaps N.W.A’s most famous singles, with the groundbreaking, hard-hitting track still serving as an introduction to gangster rap for this generation. As we prepare for this weekend’s release of the group’s hallmark biopic Straight Outta Compton, here Ice Cube looks back at the famous lyrics that ushered his neighborhood in California to the world. Created in conjunct with Vanity Fair, the video finds Ice Cube explaining his original intent when penning his verse in the song, pitting these against the interpretations by Rap Genius’s community. Cube deciphers everything from the term “sawed-off” to clarifying the whole ‘cooking enemies like gumbo’ line – and does well to debunk some ridiculous claims throughout. Enjoy the video above and be sure to buy tickets for Straight Outta Compton‘s August 14 theater release.
