British graffiti and fine artist INSA is largely known for his unique style that, in recent years, has evolved into his groundbreaking GIF-ITI animations. The animations undergo an intensive process which requires INSA to repaint a design many times, changing the design slightly each time, before combining the layers to create a final GIF. Photographing the process, the art is then made into a 600-pixel-wide image to be shared online.
His latest work is the largest undertaking in a series of artistic collaborations between Ballantine’s and artists that define its mantra of ‘Stay True’ – acting with self-conviction and passion, and follow on from previous pieces with Africa’s Black Coffee and skater Kilian Marin. After a year of planning, INSA and Ballantine’s ventured to Rio de Janeiro with a team of 20 to create the world’s largest GIF. The grand piece is the most ambitious of its kind ever attempted and spans four stages, measuring out to 57,515m2 in total. Inspired by INSA’s trademark Looking For Love motif, the painting was captured via satellite orbiting the Earth — essentially turning INSA’s work on the ground into a live, moving animated GIF-ITI piece. Check out the ‘Ballantine’s Present INSA’s Space GIF-ITI’ video above where INSA speaks on the process and have a look at the final piece.
