For its June 2011 issue, Dazed & Confused‘s Global Activism Special dedicates its pages to the struggle for freedom around the world. Chinese artist and social critic Ai Weiwei is on the cover, with a powerful portrait taken after surgery for a cerebral hemorrhage after being beaten by Chinese police. Best known in the West for his Tate Modern Turbine Hall installation “Sunflower Seeds” and his design for the Beijing “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium, Ai is one of China’s best-known contemporary artists and has been missing since he was detained by officials on April 3, 2011. The issue hits stores on May 12, 2011, with further information here.
