In a recent editorial for SENSE Magazine, visvim’s 2010 fall/winter collection and the fabrics used go under the microscope. The feature delves extensively into the relationship between visvim and Komatsu Seiren who are one of Japan’s largest fabric manufacturers. Aside from the actual process involved, the article touches upon the importance of environmental sustainability and the creation of next textiles as well.

visvim’s latest collection was presented in a mountaineering style with a vintage aesthetic. Within the collection was a new delicate material created by Japanese manufacturer Komatsu Seiren that was featured in the lining of the Totem Parka among other pieces. Seiren’s history dates back more than 60 years; from humble beginnings the company now manufactures 200 hundred million square meters of fabric each and every year, which ensures their place amongst the largest industrial companies in Japan.

Created with visvim designer Hiroki Nakamura, the unique check fabric in the collection was created by using Seiren’s pioneering digital printer, the Monalisa, to place a check print onto an extremely thin fabric which was then laminated with a breathable waterproof film.

The KONBU material featured on the current backpacks, combines nylon with a special solution which is in turn compressed created a new texture similar to canvas. Seiren unique, visionary processes have been optimised for brands both in Japan and internationally and were praised by Nakamura who claimed that they could keep up with his “impossible demands”.

Ecologically efficient, the manufacturer breaks down waste fluid from the dyeing process which is then cultivated into matter which is able to cultivate plant matter and can be place on their roof.
