イギリスの高校がデザイナーズブランドの高額なコートを着用禁止に
生徒たちに世帯間の所得格差から生じる“恥ずかしい思い”をさせないことを目的とした施策
リヴァプールがあることで知られるイギリス・マージーサイド州バーケンヘッドのウッドチャーチ高校が、同校の生徒に対し高価なデザイナーズブランドのコートを着用することを禁止とした。この取り組みは、世帯間の所得格差による“Poverty-Shaming(貧困による恥ずかしい思い)”を減少させることを目的としている。
その禁止リストには、〈Moncler(モンクレール)〉や〈Pyrenex(ピレネックス)〉、〈Canada Goose(カナダグース)〉などダウンを主力とするブランドが含まれており、価格にすると400〜1,000ポンド(約57,000〜14万4000円) となるという。学校側の説明によると、一部の生徒たちは(仲間外れにされないよう)特定のブランドのコートを着用しなければいけないというプレッシャーを感じているという。同校は数年前に同じ理由で学校指定のバッグを導入した経緯がある。また、今回の着用禁止を発表する前に、生徒の両親から禁止を求めるよう働きかけられていたとのこと。SNS上では本件に感して早くも賛否両論が巻き起こっている。

@RadioCityTalk mick my son goes too Woodchurch High he has been asking for one of these coats for Xmas.. Since the school announced this. He has told us not too bother as he can’t wear it for school.. Result for me 👍😁
