KAWS kicked off 2017 with a virtual reality experience made in collaboration with M&M and Visionaire at the New York Public Library—immersing VR goggle-clad viewers into his studio until the space suddenly transformed into a psychedelic atmosphere filled with his ubiquitous characters. Meanwhile, streetwear fans were astounded by the release of a KAWS x Air Jordan 4 silhouette alongside apparel which first released this past March. Trailing behind the huge sneaker collaboration is the artist’s partnership with Peanuts and Uniqlo this summer, boasting limited edition T-shirts, tote bags and Snoopy plushes with X’s for eyes. KAWS fanatics were also blessed with new Companion vinyl collectibles such as “Blush,” and BFF Vinyl Open Editions in blue and black hues. In the art spectrum, KAWS opened a large-scale painting exhibit at the Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis called “FAR FAR DOWN,” brought his most-famous “Where The End Starts” showcase to Shanghai’s Yuz Museum, and erected his FINAL DAYS sculpture for this year’s edition of Frieze London at Regent’s Park.
