Superstar Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is never one to pay host to a multitude of shows in a single year. When he does, it’s a “go big or go home” kind of deal. For instance, his most-popular “Octopus Eats Its Own Leg” retrospective at MCA Chicago which launched in June and concluded this September broke all attendance records at the immense establishment—193,000 visitors to be exact. Another monumental feat for Murakami this year was his first ever show in Russia at the Garage MCA in Moscow—donning a bespoke A-COLD-WALL* outfit at the opening made from designer Samuel Ross himself. Not to mention, Murakami partnered with Facebook on a series of Messenger Frames boasting his lovable Smiling Daisies character, collaborated with the Billionaire Boys Club on a special capsule, and received an 18-karat gold flower pendant/fidget spinner from reggaeton artist J. Balvin that was crafted by Ben Baller.
