Le 8 mars, le Whitney Museum of American Art ouvrira au public la 82e édition de sa Biennale emblématique, portée par 56 artistes. Comme l’asouligné le critique Holland Cotter, l’événement est réputé pour cliver le public, et au vu des premières réactions à l’édition de cette année, la tradition semble se perpétuer. Adulé ou décrié, le monde de l’art se retrouve toutefois sur un point : c’est étrange. Et lorsqu’on jette un œil à l’état du monde aujourd’hui, difficile de prétendre le contraire.

L’étiquette sied à une manifestation qui se veut un véritable baromètre de l’art américain et repose la question : que recouvre aujourd’hui une telle catégorie ? Contrairement aux récentes éditions, la Biennale 2026 ne se fixe pas sur un seul déclencheur politique et assume un cadre volontairement ouvert. Sans thème imposé, l’exposition, plus largement, gravite autour des idées de lien et de connexion.

À travers les galeries, les performances et les programmes publics, les artistes sondent des sujets allant des structures familiales aux nouveaux réseaux technologiques, en passant par la mémoire et les mythologies. « Co‑concevoir le commissariat de la Whitney Biennial offre une occasion unique de réfléchir à la manière dont les artistes sont pris dans un enchevêtrement — formel et thématique — au sein de cet écosystème que nous appelons art contemporain », explique Marcela Guerrero, qui a conçu l’exposition avec Drew Sawyer. « Avec cette Biennale, nous espérons mettre en lumière un réseau d’affinités qui esquisse de nouvelles façons de coexister dans ce monde. »

Parmi les immanquables, “Monument (Altadena)” oùKelly Akashirépond aux incendies qui ont frappé sa ville, Altadena, en Californie. Réalisée en verre lumineux, la pièce reconstitue l’unique cheminée de briques ayant résisté au désastre. Dans le hall du musée, Zach Blas présente “CULTUS”, une installation vidéo à cinq canaux qui imagine un atelier technologique ritualisé, porté par une architecture de LED.

Ailleurs, “Camoflux Recall Grotto” de Leo Castañeda transforme la galerie en environnement de jeu vidéo jouable en ultra haute définition, inspiré par les paysages luxuriants du Brésil et de la Floride, tandis que Pat Oleszko dévoile un bouffon monumental, gonflable, aux trompettes tonitruantes, intitulé “Blowhard”. Plus jeune participante de la Biennale, Taína H. Cruz signe de nouveaux graffitis sur les murs du cinquième étage et prolonge l’exposition à l’échelle du musée via le panneau publicitaire de Gansevoort Street.

Depuis 1932, l’événement sert de scène aux bouleversements de la création artistique. Il est devenu l’une des expositions phares du pays, contribuant à lancer les carrières de Nan Goldin, Paul Pfeiffer, Theaster Gates et bien d’autres. La Biennale de cette année est aussi la première depuis le lancement par le musée de programmes d’entrée gratuite, qui approfondissent son engagement envers le lien et la participation du public.
