Brooklyn-based artist Bohan Phoenix – by way of Hubei, China – has been going through it like the rest of us post-pandemic. And it’s been heightened when you tack on the added stressor of not being able to see his family back in China for three years.

On his new song “Weight Up,” arriving with an official music video, Bohan uses rap to relay that experience, coupled with anecdotes from his immigrant ancestors, who also often sacrificed seeing their families for years at a time in order to provide for them.

Big Banana produced the song, with JDH directing the video. In the visual, Bohan plays the role of an earnest Chinese immigrant in the jewelry industry, going from an apprentice to the owner of a high-end storefront.

His vision was simple: “This APAHM, I want to tell the stories of our ancestors, the people who left China generations ago to find a better future in a strange new world. This is a direct parallel to the lives I find ourselves living today In this video, I wanted to tell the story of the Chinatown jewelers whose stories are often neglected, overshadowed by the bling hanging in the storefronts.”

Stream Bohan Phoenix’s “Weight Up” and watch the official music video above.

In other music news, J Hus made his long-awaited return with the new single “It’s Crazy.”
