How to Make a Scale Model of the Solar System
Take a look at the (immensely) big picture in this poignant short documentary.
When going about our daily lives, it’s too easy to forget our place as one person amongst seven billion, on a tiny rock in the incomprehensible vastness of the universe. In short, we are insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and driving that point home is this short following friends Wylie Overstreet and Alex Gorosh as they build a scale model of the Solar System in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The beautifully shot piece sees the duo going about this gargantuan task with lit marbles and balloons representing the celestial bodies big and small, while a camera placed at a vantage point captures time lapse as the models are carried around their orbit by a jeep. The end result is somewhat belittling but all the more poignant, emphasizing the arbitrary nature of our made-up boundaries and differences on the minuscule planet we call home.
