Although designed as a part of Oskar Pernefeldt’s grad school project in Stockholm, Sweden, the designer’s ambitious new proposal has true potential to represent the greater good. The countries that comprise the world are each represented by flags, as are the overarching continents and financial unions, but the official flag of Earth itself has been left unrepresented. In a motion of sentimental universality, Pernefeldt has created a design to represent Earth – to the universe. The design draws on the designer’s studies in vexillology, opting for a specially-tinted shade of blue (to juxtapose the greater darkness of space) and a series of interconnected loops that compose a flower-like shape. The circles are emblematic of the individual spaces that we inhabit while also serving as a reminder that these spaces share a common whole.
