It seems like the Awful Records crew can never not be in work-mode. At this point, do they even sleep? Several of the members have spent the entire year flooding SoundCloud with torrents of slept-on gems, with everything from EP’s to B-sides to full-lengths being shared. As the crew’s breakout year comes to a close, Awful Records’ Archibald Slim is the latest to unleash an LP’s worth of music onto the internet, calling upon Tyler Major for a collaborative project dubbed NWO. If Awful Records is a crew of weirdo-art-punk-rap-riotstarters running amuck, Archibald Slim is their GZA-like sage-poet. He’s probably the easiest for the rap purist crowd to digest, but he still expresses a progressive, unique style that keeps him from spiraling into any sort of mid-90’s nostalgia slump or becoming the “lyrical-spiritual-miracle” type. NWO features the usual roster of Awful Records cohorts, such as Richposlim, Ethereal, Pyramid Quince, and others. The project isn’t quite like a lot of the other releases coming out of the Awful camp, and that’s part of the beauty. Awful Records has enough music to cover ever mood, season, feeling, and preference.
