Red Bull Music Academy Tokyo presents Lost In Karaoke — a special live stream experience. Bringing the sound of Japan to the comfort of homes across the globe, the initiative broadcasts live from inside seven separate booths in Tokyo’s Karaokekan Shinjuku. Transforming seven rooms of Shinjuku’s most popular Karaoke-kan into performance spaces, Lost In Karaoke subverts the ordinary function of these entertainment booths by filling them with kaleidoscopic waveforms, hypnotic rhythms, and soaring vocal chops. It serves as a showcase of new Japanese music, as well as the futuristic sounds of six up-and-coming Red Bull Music Academy participants from Australia, Kenya, Spain, Peru, Brazil and Russia. Stones Throw’s maverick multi-instrumentalist James Pants and LuckyMe’s master of shimmering synthetic soundscapes, Claude Speeed, will join the roster of Red Bull Music Academy artists. The attendees can roam from room to room over eight floors of the building, with three booths functioning as bars and several rooms normal karaoke hooked up, for those who feel inspired.
An international audience will be able to dial in to all the action via the web as we broadcast seven live video streams of the performances. Within the cosy confines of the Karaoke-kan’s booths, the familiar will be displaced, and comforting repetition will be replaced with playful experimentation.
