As one of the most complex and heterogeneous countries in the world, Sudan has been suffering decades from a civil war which killed more than 2 million people. This ultimately led to the country’s split. In January 2011, a referendum 99% of Southern Sudanese voted for secession from the North and on the 9th of July 2011, South Sudan becomes newest nation of the world.
Many problems remain to be solved, but Berlin-based Wahib Soumade of Media in Cooperation and Transition (M.I.C.T.) has been igniting musical collaborative projects for a good cause in the shape of Sudan Votes Music Hopes. The project started out as a cassette given away throughout Sudan in 2010, before the elections. We have already seen and heard two EPs off of this project series. Now, a third installment, entitled SVMH RMXD003 has hit shelves this past Saturday through Akwaaba. The piece has been put together by Tyler Pope of LCD Soundsystem, Hercules and Love Affair fame and boasts a track by Tyler’s Neo Project #2 featuring Alsarah entitled “Salam Nubia.” The B-side tune features Sudanese heavyweight “Yousif Elmosley” which has received a royal house remix by Berlin-based DJ/produced Edward. The artwork comes courtesy of Parisan artist Paul Hamy. You can now listen to this mini-mix of both sides below
