Não importa onde você se posicione no espectro amor-ódio em relação à música pop: seu apelo melódico é quase impossível de resistir. Apesar da reputação de ser performativa, exageradamente sincera e, por vezes, excessiva, é um gênero que sempre viveu no fio da navalha — e que prospera não apesar de suas inúmeras contradições, mas precisamente por causa delas.

Na mais recente mostra coletiva da P·P·O·W Gallery, Hope is a dangerous thing levanta o véu reluzente do pop e se deleita em seu lado mais sombrio e introspectivo. Inspirada na faixa que encerra o álbum de estúdio de 2019 de Lana Del Rey Norman F*cking Rockwell, a exposição toma o disco como um retrato elegíaco da juventude millennial, do capitalismo tardio e da estranha calmaria que, às vezes, sucede o desespero.

Com curadoria de Eden Deering, a mostra monta uma banda de fantasia composta por Kyle Dunn, Raque Ford, Paul Kopkau, Diane Severin Nguyen, Kayode Ojo, Marianna Simnett e Robin F. Williams — uma espécie de “Spice Girls das artes”, em que cada integrante encarna sua própria persona pop. Juntas, as obras em exibição enfrentam as tensões e dualidades, muitas vezes conflitantes, que moldam nossa compreensão da figura enigmática — e onipresente — da estrela pop contemporânea.

Em doses iguais de otimismo dos anos 2000 e melancolia forjada digitalmente, uma reverência coletiva ao camp, à autenticidade e à coragem da autorreinvenção pulsa pelo espaço. “Siri Serving”, pintura fosforescente de Williams, flagra uma vocalista inalcançável no meio de uma serenata, suspensa entre presença e ilusão. Já “Happiness is a butterfly”, de Dunn — que coloca o álbum de Del Rey em primeiro plano — conta a história de uma estrela de vidro cujo desejo de ser bela é esfriado pela realidade dura e nada glamourosa que a circunda.

Para além da música pop em si, várias obras acionam uma nostalgia cultural mais ampla: em “In the Ocean, In Da Club, and In my Dreams”, Ford grava uma fanfic mal-sucedida de Rihanna e Beyoncé sobre formas escultóricas luminosas, enquanto as esculturas de Ojo investigam a sedução do fast fashion e da descartabilidade — nem tudo que reluz é ouro.

Hope is a dangerous thing abraça as contradições que residem no coração do pop: a ilusão de que a beleza — ou mesmo sua aparência — pode nos salvar, e a esperança de que, talvez, só talvez, isso ainda seja possível. Como resumiu Deering, a exposição “perambula pela linha entre fé, esperança e sonho. Há uma resiliência em simplesmente seguir em frente, e há algo profundamente belo nisso.”

A mostra fica em cartaz até 11 de julho.
