PlayStation 5 Sold 5-Times the Number of Xbox Series X and S Consoles Last Quarter

Almost four years after the launch of the PlayStation 5, customers are still snapping up the console and seem to be choosing it over the Xbox.

According to one analyst, the PS5 is selling at five times the rate of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, IGN reported first.

Analyst Daniel Ahmed reported on X that, to date, Sony has sold 59.2 million PS5 units as of March 31. While a lofty number, the sales still fall just a bit short of the PlayStation 4’s success, which had sold 60 million units within the same time window.

This is slightly behind the PS4 in the same time frame (60 million). They do not expect the PS5 to surpass the PS4 in the next year.

In the last quarter alone, approximately 4.5 million PS5’s were sold, compared to Microsoft selling 900,000 Xbox Series X and S consoles. Both consoles debuted in November 2020, putting them in direct competition with one another.

Although, as Ahmed points out, the PlayStation to Xbox ratio of sales has always been around 2:1, “it’s just the past year where the gap has started to widen significantly.”

It seems unlikely that the Xbox will catch up to the PlayStation, at least until Microsoft puts out a new console.
