Jonathan Anderson‘s eponymous label — JW Anderson — took the fashion month by storm with his men’s Spring/Summer 2023 and women’s Resort 2023 runway show during Milan Fashion Week, and now the collections from each season have been released.

With a reconfigured take on his viral Pigeon Clutch bag to reworkings of the label’s phallic keyrings, Anderson presents one of his most experimental collections to date. Staples like the loafer mules are embellished with crystals, as are the various Bumper Bags and Bumper-Tube heeled mules.

Dazzling details take many forms: hinges are used to bring a top and bottom together to create a dress, while a denim mini skirt also sports hinges on the waist for another utilitarian “but make it fashion” fixture. Such workwear undertones infiltrate the collection elsewhere, as rubber gloves are printed onto crewneck jumpers and chains have been linked to create chunky silver jewelry.

Playful references reading “Eat Me” — printed on what would be an apple’s sticker — adorn other sweaters, while a stock image of a child eating said apple works another must-have top this season. “Bad Apple,” half-eaten apples, and more work beanies, baseball caps, tees and the designer’s signature intarsia knit neckband, while nods to his work at LOEWE comes in with spiraled coils doubling as the heel on shoes.

JW Anderson’s comprehensive collection isn’t done until another nuance comes to the fore, as distressed motifs recontextualize the often clean-cut image of the aforementioned neckband, seeing its top part frayed. Bucket hats are asymmetrical, crewnecks sport scrawled haphazard chest JWA branding, and the QR Code jumper goes all-out on the distressed detailing.
