« Two » de Carsten Höller ouvre à UCCA Beijing, marquant sa première grande exposition personnelle en Chine.

Visible jusqu’au 31 janvier 2027, la scénographie divise l’espace en deux univers parallèles : l’un coloré, l’autre monochrome.

Les visiteurs interagissent avec des lits robotisés errants, des carrousels au mouvement lent et des installations à ingérer.

Le UCCA Center for Contemporary Art de Pékin accueille Two de Carsten Höller, une grande exposition conçue pour ce lieu, qui transforme l’emblématique Grande Halle de 1 877 m² du musée en environnement interactif. Commissariée par Philip Tinari et Jiashu Zou, commissaire assistante au UCCA, l’exposition constitue ce que Höller appelle un « laboratoire du doute » : un dispositif architectural qui scinde délibérément la Grande Halle, marquée par l’esthétique industrielle, en deux environnements parallèles et symétriques — l’un entièrement décliné dans des couleurs vives, l’autre en noir et blanc.

Dès leur arrivée, les visiteurs se voient attribuer au hasard une entrée, qui détermine définitivement leur parcours initial à travers les deux espaces jumeaux. Le dispositif réunit des installations emblématiques spécialement adaptées au UCCA Beijing, dont « Tilted Carousel (Two Whites) » et « Tilted Carousel (Five Colours) » : deux manèges de fête foraine en état de marche, hauts de 6,3 mètres et habillés d’ampoules clignotantes. Effectuant de lents mouvements de rotation en sens inverse sur un cycle de deux minutes, ils maintiennent leurs passagers suspendus et prisonniers jusqu’à l’achèvement d’un tour complet.

Les salles parallèles abritent également deux instruments de mesure du temps contrastés : la configuration au néon « Sexagesimal Clock », réglée sur l’heure conventionnelle, fait face à « Decimal Clock », une horloge fonctionnelle reposant sur l’ancien système décimal de dix heures de la Révolution française. La partie centrale présente par ailleurs la sculpture interactive en marbre « Dice », dont les visiteurs peuvent physiquement escalader l’intérieur creux, ainsi que « Pill Clock », qui laisse tomber sur le sol, toutes les trois secondes, des pilules ingérables contenant une substance non divulguée.
