Cette année, cinq lauréats ont été distingués lors de la toute première édition des Jaguar Arts Awards.

Conçu en partenariat avec le Royal College of Art (RCA) à Londres pour soutenir les talents créatifs émergents, le prix a invité les étudiants en master des Beaux-Arts et des Arts appliqués à réaliser un projet sur la base du brief « Copy Nothing » – un manifeste créatif inspiré par la vision pionnière du fondateur de Jaguar, Sir William Lyons.

Chaque lauréat a reçu, à l’obtention de son diplôme du RCA, une bourse destinée à accompagner son développement en tant qu’artiste indépendant. Cependant, la révélation, ce fut Jobe Burns, sculpteur et designer britannique, originaire de Walsall, au Royaume-Uni, qui a reçu la plus haute distinction – le Gerry McGovern Award – pour son projet « Intimate Conversation ».

« Intimate Conversation » est une œuvre sculpturale composée de deux corps en dialogue, reliés par des tiges d’armature rouillées récupérées sur le chantier du RCA. Des couches de peinture automobile « candy » créent un spectre orange-rouge saturé, chaque surface réfractant la lumière à sa manière pour révéler, sous tous les angles, la profondeur et le mouvement. Inspirée par l’approche chromatique de Jaguar, l’œuvre célèbre le savoir-faire tout en refusant l’imitation.

L’œuvre de Burns s’est distinguée non seulement par son excellence technique, mais aussi par sa profondeur conceptuelle. Les deux formes mouvantes incarnent avec finesse le motif « strikethrough » de Jaguar. La bourse lui a permis d’élever l’ambition de son travail, en s’installant dans un atelier à la campagne pour développer des œuvres publiques de grande envergure. « Le travail de Jobe, en particulier, a épousé la philosophie qui vise à créer des pièces capables d’éveiller l’émotion par le récit, et son usage instinctif de la couleur et des formes modernistes s’accordait parfaitement avec l’éthos de Jaguar, privilégiant une expression artistique authentique », a déclaré le professeur Gerry McGovern OBE, directeur de la création de JLR, à propos du prix.

Yvann Zahui a été désigné finaliste et a reçu un Jaguar Award pour « Auto-Portraits », un triptyque photographique qui réinvente l’automobile comme prolongement de soi. Les trois autres Jaguar Awards ont été remis à Emma Goring pour « Modern Tradition », Ali Bartlett pour « Illuminated Silence », et Annabel MacIver pour « Colour Wheel », tous trois salués pour une créativité d’exception.
