Nur die wenigsten von uns können behaupten, schon einmal im Haus ihres Lieblingskünstlers oder ihrer Lieblingskünstlerin gewesen zu sein – für Fans von Do Ho Suh steht diese Tür jedoch stets offen. Der südkoreanische Künstler hat gerade seine bislang größte Ausstellung im National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA), eröffnet. Noch bis zum 9. Februar 2027 versammelt die Schau Hunderte bislang ungesehene, ikonische und jüngere Arbeiten und bietet damit einen beispiellosen Einblick in seine unverwechselbare künstlerische Praxis.

Bekannt ist Suh für seine farbenfrohen Installationen aus „Textilarchitektur“, in denen er Fragen von Familie, Erinnerung, Identität, Entwurzelung und Gemeinschaft verhandelt – oft über den Körper oder das Zuhause. Seine eigenen Erfahrungen in Korea, den Vereinigten Staaten und Europa prägen dabei maßgeblich, welch hohe Bedeutung er unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beimisst – ob räumlich, sozial oder politisch.

Die aktuelle MMCA-Schau versammelt mehr als 500 Arbeiten aus drei Jahrzehnten seines Schaffens – von Installationen und Skulpturen über Zeichnungen bis hin zu Videoarbeiten. Mehrere seiner berühmten Stoffinstallationen – „Perfect Home: London, Horsham, New York, Berlin, Providence, Seoul“ (2024), „Nest/s“ (2024) und „Rubbing/Loving: Seoul Home“ (2013–2022) – sind besonders eindrucksvoll präsent. Ebenso sehenswert sind Skizzen aus seiner Studienzeit und filigrane Textilillustrationen, die mit einer gemeinsam mit STPI Singapore entwickelten Technik entstanden sind.

Die Arbeiten, mit denen Suh erstmals international bekannt wurde, kommen übrigens ganz ohne Häuser aus. Zu den weiteren Highlights zählen „Floor“, seine Arbeit für die Biennale von Venedig 2001, die aus Zehntausenden von Kunststofffiguren besteht, welche das Gewicht des Publikums über sich tragen, sowie „Some/One“ (2001), ein schimmerndes, hohles Gewand aus militärischen Erkennungsmarken, das während seines Wehrdienstes entstand. Die Spannung zwischen Individuum und Kollektiv war dabei schon immer präsent.

Suh präsentiert außerdem erstmals „Memory of Love“ (2026). Die neue Jacke entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit RE;CODE, dem koreanischen Label, das für upgecycelte und nachhaltig produzierte Kleidung bekannt ist. Stoffstücke aus der Kleidung seiner eigenen Familie bilden im Inneren der Jacke sanfte Taschen für Erinnerungsstücke.
