For Lotus, making a sports car is in their blood. They've been doing it since the '50s for motorsport, the '70s with the Espirit and Elan models, but really took off in the '90s with the Elise and Exige and onward. Now we're graced with different editions of the Emira, with two different engine types in the V6 and inline-four cylinder turbo. But can it get even better?

Lotus invited a select group of media journalists to discover the Emira 420 Sport, its most hardcore, performance-focused edition of its sleek sports coupe yet. It's equipped with more power, track-developed suspension, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-supported downforce and more. We were largely impressed with the Emira's supercharged V6 First Edition, and slightly disappointed with the AMG-powered 2.0L version afterwards.

Third time's a charm, perhaps? Possibly, but there are a few things you need to know about the 420 Sport before you make your own informed decision.

It Comes from a Lineage of Very Special Lotuses

As commonplace the word may be, Lotus doesn't throw the word 'Sport' around much. In fact, it's reserved for the even more hardcore, capable vehicles, and separates it from the production cars quite a bit.

During our press invite, Lotus schooled us on its Sport vehicles, with exhibitions of two previous iterations: the Lotus Esprit Sport 300, and the Lotus Exige Sport 350. The rep explained how these Sport models elevated their specific platforms, utilizing lightweight additions and/or subtractions from the chassis and refinement of components to create a more focused driving experience. The Exige Sport 350 specifically drew our attention, as the engineer explained the intricacies of the gearbox and aero that went into the car to push it that much more than the Exige already was.

Similarly, the Lotus Emira 420 Sport follows this methodology. Its ground effect aerodynamics have been overhauled at the front, sides, rear bumper and rear spoiler, for a gain of 25kg of downforce with no drag penalty. The rear quarter intake channels receive a huge scoop, force feeding cool accelerated air into the mid-engine intakes. New low-pressure exits are added to the front fenders. And the rear spoiler is a functional new addition. All of this may seem minuscule, but are just a part of the complete package of the 420 Sport.

It's More Than Just Power

Besides the lightweight-ness, new aero, and a slight increase in power of 14 hp and 14 lb-ft. of torque for 414 and 368 respectively, the Lotus Emira 420 Sport is best configured with its Lightweight Handling Pack. With it comes a new 2-way adjustable damper by Multimatic, allowing for both tuning of the car's compression and rebound. The rear window is replaced with a very retro-inspired louvre made of carbon fiber, providing an escape for engine heat so it can be pushed harder for longer. The optional pack also includes Michelin Cup 2 tires with custom "LTS" development, a titanium exhaust, ultra-lightweight Antigravity lithium-ion battery and more.

In our opinion, the Lightweight Handling Pack is a must for a hardcore, more focused elevation model like the Emira 420 Sport. Sure the pack is pricey – an additional $12,900 USD according to the brand – but the suspension alone is worth the cost of entry. Add in the priciest Michelin tires you could spec (~ $2,000 USD), and a 75% lighter battery ($850 USD), and the pack starts to look like a real deal. Opting without it would be a mistake.

It Addressed a Few Issues

We were happy to hear from Lotus that the Emira 420 Sport addressed a few complaints from customers. Ourselves included.

When we tested both the Emira V6 SE and the AMG-powered four-cylinder edition, we noticed a small nuisance on the steering wheel, where our palm muscle would apply just the right amount of pressure at hard turns, causing us to interact with the soft touch directional pads on both sides. Not anymore. The 420 Sport gets an updated steering wheel with more resistant physical buttons in its place, which we actually still interacted with on the track, but far less easily.

Another customer-addressing change for all Lotus Emira models is the new removable roof, creating a targa-like open air cabin. We questioned what the weight delta was with the new roof mechanism compared to the hard roof and the engineer said it was negligible, and theoretically the roof can be separated from the car (instead of being stored behind the seats) to shed a few extra pounds. Small change and significant request but if customers asked for it, Lotus delivered.

It Still Sounds Absolutely Incredible

The Lotus Emira V6 SE was the first time we got our hands on the sports coupe, and its supercharger whine and sonorous V6 was music to our ears. Then we test drove the 2.0L four-cylinder AMG-powered edition and were largely disappointed with its performance, but thankful the sound element was left intact in the form a wooshy, whistlin' turbo and intake next to your left ear. We are delighted to report none of that has changed.

The Emira 420 Sport utilizes the same 2.0L AMG-derived four-cylinder engine and turbo arrangement for a gob of torque at mid-to-high rpms. As you pull, the rush of air being crammed into the intake creates a joyous vacuum sound, and the turbo waste gate purges just as loud. Rinse and repeat as we bombed down British roads. Our concerns were confirmed however that the UK fans get slighted just a bit, as sitting on the right-hand side separates you from all these wonderful noises mounted to the left-side of the car, but overall the symphony is still there. Oh, and the exhaust pops and crackles in Sport mode don't disappoint either.

It's a Hard Pill to Swallow

So where do you sign? Not so fast. There is one thing about the Emira 420 Sport you need to know in order to make an informed decision on it: the price.

There's no easy way of saying this: it's just shy of $123,000 USD. The standard Emira with the same engine starts at $106,900 USD already which is a lot to ask for in a 2.0L engine as its heart, but nevertheless it is what it is and the Emira has found an audience. Now with the 420 Sport at its price and a Lightweight Handling Pack that's anything but optional pushing that price up to $135,800 USD, you'll have to seriously ask yourself – is this what you're ready to put down for what you get?

So what are your options then at $135k? Forget the Porsche Cayman GT4 – it's been discontinued. The Corvette Z06 could fit the bill, but suits a specific consumer who values a lot more in the power department and less in the luxury feel and appeal. You could look into the Alpine A110 that's also a four-cylinder turbo midship and far cheaper at $80,000 USD, but only if you're shopping in Europe.

So it looks like Lotus kind of has the market to itself with the Emira, and with the 420 Sport, they've even opened it up to a client who wants even more out of it. Seems like an easy decision – except we'd still go for a slightly used, supercharged manual V6 edition.

The bespoke design originates from the Ad Personam personalization department. Rather than relying on standard graphics, designers pulled visual cues from samurai aesthetics. The vehicle exterior features sharp line work mimicking the sweeping motion of a katana strike. Gold detailing references the odoshi silk cords used to bind ancient armor plates. Last month, LEGO Technic unveiled the latest creation in its Ultimate Car Concept Series: the Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear. Posing itself as one of the most powerful megacars from the Swedish brand, the project saw LEGO Technic translate its mechanical ingenuity into a 1:8 scale model as well as a life-size version that officially broke records as the fastest ever LEGO build.

Following its debut at Koenigsegg’s headquarters in Ängelholm, Sweden, the two builds were showcased at Goodwood Festival of Speed. On opening day, Hypebeast met up with car journalist Callum Mullin of Callum’s Cars at the annual motorsport event to check out the display. Surrounded by the latest vehicles and technology from global car brands, Mullin finds out why the LEGO Technic Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear is making waves amongst both LEGO fans and car enthusiasts.

As with every Goodwood festival, the day begins with the Duke of Richmond completing the staggering hill climb route, then it's straight to the Koenigsegg paddock where Mullin discovers the 1:1 Sadair’s Spear build. Positioned next to the original megacar, the LEGO Technic version sat with its doors open for attendees to take a closer look at how the components were reimagined with more than 327,000 LEGO Technic elements.

Upon stepping into the space, the first thing to grab Mullin’s attention is the outer shell. As well as simply giving the car a unique scale-like texture, the shield-shaped pieces are cleverly designed to reference Koenigsegg’s logo, hinting at more hidden details in the build. Having taken a large part of the 9,400-hour development, the skin of the car turned out to be one of the most popular features on the day with crowds of fans gathering to discover the individual panels constructed of 53 LEGO Technic elements.

It wouldn’t be a Koenigsegg car without the all-important ghost mode so, after checking out of the components, Mullin takes his place in the driver’s seat ready to initiate the feature. With several superfans looking on, the vehicle’s rear clam, dihedral synchro-helix doors and front hood are raised in one single movement, proving to be just as impressive as the original megacar.

Despite taking center stage at the event, the life-sized Sadair’s Spear build is all to celebrate the unveiling of the 1:8 scale model version, which launched globally this month. With it showcased at the paddock on its own podium, Mullin later explores the way designers brought the car’s signature functionality into a smaller structure – from the Koenigsegg wheel and the start button to a replica of the nine-speed transmission and the twin turbo that moves when the car is in motion.

To finish the day, Mullin takes his place on Goodwood Hill where the life-sized LEGO Technic Sadair’s Spear was put to the test in the challenging hill climb. After a procession of racecars and supercars, the LEGO build made its way up with Koenigsegg test driver Markus Lundh behind the wheel. Like its test run, which beat the previous 50 km/h record with a 111km/h run, it brought power and unfathomable speed to the climb.

For its third year at the Amundi Evian Championship, Porsche – the dedicated Automotive and Mobility Partner – pulled out all the stops for its VIP guests as it put on a series of special activations alongside the action of the four-day tournament.

Celebrating 75 years of Porsche Motorsport, the brand took over the picturesque site overlooking Lake Geneva with showcases of its latest automotives, including the new Formula E Porsche 975 RSE race car. While attendees rode across the mountainous landscape around Evian in exclusive test drives, golf pros as well as amateurs in the Pro-Am were invited to participate in the returning hole-in-one competition, which offered them the chance to win the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric.

Elsewhere, the brand rounded up 100 of its international customers for an exclusive programme of experiences. Curated to give them an all-encompassing look at the world of Porsche, the group embarked on a road trip to Esery golf club in the new Cayenne Turbo Electric, before heading to Montreux Jazz Festival, supported by Porsche, to enjoy a live concert from John Legend.

Back at the tournament, South Korean golfer Haeran Ryu battled it out against Canadian player Brooke Henderson. On the edge of the 18th green, some attendees watched on from Porsche’s Sky Lounge as Ryu took the crown after achieving a birdie in the first extra hole. Coming as her second consecutive major win, the victory wasn’t just a moment of personal glory, it topped the tables as the lowest score ever from a pro woman golfer.

Reflecting on the event, Porsche’s Director of Brand Management and Partnerships, Deniz Keskin, shared, “It was great to see how enthusiastically our customers and VIP guests embraced the Porsche experience – whether it was during test drives of our entire model lineup or through direct interaction with the new, all-electric Cayenne, which we placed at the heart of the tournament.
