AMA Cocktail Lounge Channels the Allure of ‘Bladerunner 2049’

Towards the end of last year, a new cocktail lounge and rawbar titled AMA opened in Vancouver, British Columbia. But what excites about the new space is its futuristic atmosphere that is inspired by Bladerunner 2049.

Aside from the storylines, one of the hallmarks of science fiction films is their affinity for completely expanded design work, which we seldom encounter daily – that’s part of the fantasy. So when those concepts are brought to life in everyday spaces, it’s surely a magical moment. Designed by the Canadian designers &Daughters, the 52-seat restaurant is nestled in a two-story 1970s Vancouuver walk-up – largely hidden from the street.

Void of natural light, the space is cloaked in a golden haze that mirrors Denis Villeneuve’s futuristic film with the primary light source terminating from the perimeter wall. With its artfully crafted design, the diffused light style functions as a way of suspending and fast-forwarding time. Elsewhere in the space are Venetian plaster walls, velvet curtains, velvet banquettes, vinyl flooring, semi-transparent golden mirrors and metal details.

Another core aspect of AMA is its square U-shaped bar, finished in polished black granite. Whether it be the bars, wine wall, waiting area, or even the coat check, the entire spaces were created with seamless style integration and immersing guests in a futuristic fantasy.
