Berlin’s techno scene has been added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage, a designation that serves to promote and protect important cultural traditions.

Typically, the list is reserved for activities and events more closely related to a given culture. Among the five other newcomers to the list in Germany were a specific sewing technique, a form of acapella singing popular in the city of Brandenburg and a winter parade where people wear furry costumes that takes place yearly in Bavaria.

Techno, however, is undeniably central to the cultural identity of Berlin. It’s the most popular city in the world, drawing in locals and foreigners to its renowned clubs.

The application had been submitted to UNESCO by the electronic music non-profit Rave the Planet in November 2022.

Berlin’s Clubcommission wrote on X that the designation is “another milestone for Berlin techno producers, artists, club operators and event organizers.”

“Our gratitude goes in particular to bands like Kraftwerk and African-American DJs and producers like Underground Resistance from Detroit, who made a significant contribution to the creation and spread of techno culture,” the commission said.
