Tokyo Artist LY Comes to London for the First Time
The artist’s ‘Living with LUV’ pop-up takes over Truman Brewery for three days this month.
Japanese artist LY is making her first official appearance in London with a three-day pop-up at the Dray Walk Gallery this month. Hosted in collaboration with Avant Arte, Living with LUV will see the Tokyo-based artist debut new work including a series of limited edition sculptures and paintings featuring the aforementioned LUV – the artist’s self-reflective, wary-eyed amorphous figure – as well as a selection collectibles and apparel.
Born in Tokyo, 1981, LY’s work explores everyday acts of life in her signature monochromatic style. Her muse and alter-ego, LUV, journeys through seemingly simple daily musings that reflect the artist’s own experiences: skateboards and fast food nod to her days as a Tokyo youth, while flowers and dogs hark back to life as a mum and time spent with her daughter.
Amongst the works on show at the pop-up are three limited edition sculptures that bring together these memories. Two of the hand-painted bronze renditions – LUV’S BURGERS and LIVING WITH LUV – feature LY’s mysterious black figure, while a third – LUV’S DOG “PARK” – celebrates (wo)man’s best friend, an appropriately grey, cloud-like dog, the latest addition to LUV’s universe. The works will be available to purchase in person at the exhibition, but Hypebeast UK readers have been given priority, early access via Avant Arte’s website with the code U82A-237P-4O14.
Those interested in visiting Living with LUV can do so daily between 10:00-19:00 at the Dray Walk Gallery, 91 Brick Lane, London. The pop-up is open June 16, 17 and 18. Admission is free.
