H&M and Ingka Group, the world’s largest IKEA franchisee, have opened the doors to their Atelier100 space in West London. Described as “by Londoners, for Londoners,” the space will showcase designers and creatives living within 100km of the city.

All of the products in the space will be produced using locally-sourced materials as part of the Atelier100 commitment to create a “hyper-local” and sustainable approach to retail. Additionally, the creatives chosen will receive mentorship from industry leaders, as well as funding to help bring their ideas to life.

The first batch of creatives include designer Adam Jones — known for his upcycling and beer-inspired pieces — along with furniture designer Martino Gamper, marbled clothing label Octavia Banks and color changing jewelry brand gum.ldn.

The Atelier100 space itself was designed by London-based studio Plaid, using materials, including lighting, shelving and mirrors that were sourced from now-closed H&M and Topshop stores. Atelier100 opens with a newspaper stand-inspired kiosk designed to explain the space, before a large transparent table at the heart of the space. This table is designed to encourage conversation, while also helping to spotlight work from the designers. Across the entire workshop, bold branding designed by London studio Bibliothèque features extensively.

In other design news, MVRDV recently installed an orange walkway in Rotterdam.
