O artista norte‑americano Roe Ethridge abre o arquivo de Nobuyoshi Araki para uma nova mostra em dueto na Anton Kern Gallery, em Nova York. Araki, conhecido por seu estilo confessional de “I-Photography”, e Ethridge, um notável pictorialista pop, dividem o espaço pela primeira vez, unidos pelo talento para a tensão visual e por abordagens de forte vocação pictórica e justaposições diante da câmera.

Curada e sequenciada pelo próprio Ethridge, a exposição revela um verdadeiro tesouro de naturezas‑mortas, nus e arranjos florais, aproximando os códigos estéticos distintos dos artistas. Ethridge apresenta duas novas impressões de sua onírica série pinhole Floral Arrangements dos anos 90, uma decisão inspirada pelas obras de Araki encharcadas de Liquitex, Painted Flowers (2004), que evocam a tranquila banalidade dos enfeites suburbanos e as lembranças dos calendários de sua mãe.

Ele coloca essas imagens em diálogo com recortes do arquivo de Araki, em especial Flower Cemetery e Tokyo Nude. Cenas eróticas encenadas se sobrepõem à brutalidade dos becos de Tóquio, oscilando entre o público e o privado, enquanto a cortesia habitual da beleza floral é rompida por figuras plásticas inquietantes, pontuadas ao longo das obras.

Ethridge se inspira na espontaneidade de Araki em “Landing in Tokyo”, um clique de iPhone do Monte Fuji feito da janela do avião, e em “Rainbow over Shore Front Parkway”, um registro sublime do que vem depois da chuva. Ambas as imagens acessam o modo visceral de documentação que caracteriza o mestre japonês, recriado por meio de gestos universais e contemporâneos.

Nobuyoshi Araki and Roe Ethridge está em cartaz agora no espaço principal da Anton Kern Gallery e na vitrine da 91 Walker até 2 de julho.
