A exposição solo de Christian Rex van Minnen, Metanoia na NANZUKA UNDERGROUND marca sua segunda grande apresentação na galeria, após sua estreia em 2021. Conhecido por seu imaginário surreal e perturbador, van Minnen apresenta novas obras que aprofundam sua pesquisa sobre transformação psicológica, corporeidade e o grotesco.

Esta exposição marca um ponto decisivo na trajetória do artista, como indica o título Metanoia, que remete a uma mudança mental profunda ou a uma conversão espiritual. Radicado em Santa Cruz, Califórnia, van Minnen é celebrado por sua fusão singular entre técnicas barrocas de pintura a óleo do século XVII — inspiradas em mestres como Rembrandt e Rachel Ruysch —, o Surrealismo do século XX e a cultura underground americana contemporânea.

A mostra reúne 15 novos óleos que evidenciam uma abordagem dupla em sua prática: seu característico surrealismo grotesco e uma nova série que ele chama de naturezas‑mortas “Straightforward”. Entre as obras de grande formato, destacam‑se “Still Life with Snake in Vase and Upside Down Figure” e “Still Life with Octopus in Vase and Upside Down Figure”, que revelam sua habilidade de unir arranjos florais majestosos a elementos viscerais e desconcertantes, como polvos e serpentes. Em contraponto, naturezas‑mortas mais clássicas, como “Still Life with Grapes, Melon, and Apples”, expressam um desejo recente de celebrar diretamente a natureza e a criação, em vez de desconstruir ou subverter formas tradicionais, como fez em fases anteriores.

As pinturas convidam o público a refletir se deve voltar ao conforto da tradição ou seguir às cegas em direção ao novo, sempre imerso em uma linguagem visual que transcende as fronteiras entre o grotesco e o sublime.
